How We Engage the Community

Community development is a journey that we undertake together with the people in the community. To create greater ownership in our programmes, we strive to foster participation and involve the community in decision making processes. Integral to building resilient and cohesive communities, our programmes and continuous engagements with them are the first of many steps towards this goal.

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) is the universally recognised international  instrument detailing the recognition, protection and promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples in international law and policy. The UNDRIP emphasizes the rights of indigenous peoples to live in dignity, to maintain and strengthen their own institutions, cultures and traditions and to pursue their self-determined development. We are committed to the promotion, respect and fulfillment of the rights of indigenous peoples.

Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) is a right that pertains to indigenous peoples and is recognised in the UNDRIP. The FPIC ensures that the community has the right to give, withhold or withdraw consent to any programmes that may affect them or their land. They also have the self-determination to negotiate the conditions under which the programme will be designed, implemented, monitored and evaluated. We strive to implement the guidelines of the FPIC in all of our programmes and engagements with the community.
