The orang asli rely on kerosene lamps, wood fires, and dried palm kernel bonfires for light and warmth. These could affect their health in the long-term and pose a fire hazard.
Some families rely on diesel-powered generators, car batteries, and heavy-duty 6V batteries for power. They are spending more than the average person despite their low power consumption.
Children are unable to study at night, causing them to fall behind and eventually drop out. Women have less time to be productive; they cannot see properly at night and risk hurting themselves when doing chores.
From buying expensive energy sources that are not sustainable
From non-renewable energy and less environmental pollution as well

An AC solar system in community spaces (Rumah Adat) provides various potential for the community, such as lights and a community freezer that require electricity.
Address the daily needs of families with cost effective and easy-to-use solar devices that provide lighting and phone charging.
I (used to) burn palm fruit. I could not afford to buy fuel. It was really tough. (Now) I am able to save some money from using the solar devices.
I’m very grateful that I was provided solar energy. The atmosphere during the night is now brighter. I can cook and eat with ease. The children can do their homework.
In the past, the roof, wall of the house and clothes were all black because of the smoke from the diesel lamp. Now that we have solar lights, it is easy because we have lights and can charge our phone.
I’m thankful I can save a little, I no longer need to buy diesel every month. The house is already bright and my wife can now cook at night with ease. It’s not as dark as it used to be.
I can cook and do the dishes more efficiently now. It is especially useful when we have guests over and we no longer need to converse in the dark as the house is so much brighter.
It’s still dark even though I use the diesel lamp. Now that we have solar lights, I can fold clothes, tidy up the kitchen, do some washing. I can also teach my child how to write and read a little.
