On 25 April 2018, we were invited to Laneige Malaysia’s Water Bar Media Launch event at ABC Cooking Studio in Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur. This year marks the third year that we’re collaborating with Laneige through their Waterful Sharing Campaign to provide clean water to underprivileged and rural communities suffering from water poverty.
To date, we have worked together to empower over 1,300 orang asli in five communities across Pahang and Perak, developing better health and sanitation in these villages and giving them a chance of a better future.
This year, we have identified another six orang asli villages that do not have access to clean and safe water. The condition of these villages is dismal; the old and young alike suffer from skin diseases that riddle their skin with itchy bumps and open wounds. Diarrhoea from drinking contaminated water is a common occurrence.
During the CSR sharing session, Foong Winnie, Brand General Manager of Laneige, spoke about the significance and impact of the Waterful Sharing Campaign. “Most of us take safe water for granted. But many people in our country live every day without clean water. Water is at the core of our brand and our innovation. We nourish lives around the world with innovation in our skincare products. This meaningful partnership with Global Peace Foundation will enable us to nourish more lives in need in the rural communities with clean water sources.”
This was followed by a presentation by Dr. Teh, CEO of Global Peace Malaysia, who shared in-depth about the life and living conditions of the orang asli villages we’ve been to. “It is saddening to see how the residents of some rural villages in Malaysia is affected by the condition of their water source, which could lead to serious illness outbreaks such as skin diseases, typhoid fever, and other water-related illnesses. The situation could worsen as clean water resources become more limited due to unpredictable weather and environment in these villages. Their daily water supply comes only from ponds and rain water collected in self-dug wells, which make the water easily contaminated and unsafe for daily usage,” said Dr. Teh.
A total of 114 LifeStraw Family filters is planned to be installed in Kampung Ulu Kampar, Perak; and Kampung Pecah Bateri, Kampung Gong, Kampung Paluh, Kampung Batu Gong, and Kampung Cerampak, Pahang. This project would benefit about 770 people.
The Swiss-designed LifeStraw filters are approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and remove up to 99.9999% of bacteria, protozoan parasites, and viruses, and filter out particles larger than 0.02 microns. It is portable, easy to use and maintain, and the filtered water is safe to drink even without boiling.
Along with unveiling the new and improved range of Water Bank products that will be available from May 2018 onwards, Laneige pledged to donate RM10 from each sale of the Water Bank Hydro or Moisture Essence towards the campaign to fund the installation of LifeStraw filters in six orang asli villages. The campaign will commence from May to June 2018 and aims to raise a total of RM80,000. The public may show their support and find out more about the initiative by heading to the Laneige Water Bar in Mid Valley Centre Court from 14th – 20th May 2018.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Teh expressed his enthusiasm to kickstart the Waterful Sharing Campaign 2018. “We are excited to be partnering with Laneige for the third year to reach out to more underserved communities. Every life matters so we are committed to empower and uplift these communities through clean water. We urge everyone to do your part by supporting this campaign.”
